The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) blocked access to the free and editable internet encyclopedia Wikipedia in Pakistan on Saturday after it failed to remove offensive religious content.
After two days of service degradation, the complete ban is filed |
PTA had given Wikipedia a final 48-hour notice to remove sacrilegious content from their page before the block.
PTA, on the other hand, completely blocked access to the website from Pakistan after it failed to comply with the order within the allotted time.
In addition, the PTA stated that it had provided Wikipedia with a personal hearing with the telecom authority. However, neither the content nor a Wikipedia representative showed up to the hearing.
Officials from the PTA stated that the ban would be lifted once the content that was reported was removed.
Especially noteworthy is the fact that college and university students make up a significant portion of Pakistan's Wikipedia users.
It is also frequently observed that Wikipedia information cannot be verified, despite the fact that users can edit the pages.
However, for defamatory content, PTA had also sent notices to this website and even Google.
Due to the presence of offensive content, the PTA banned YouTube in Pakistan for nearly two years at one point.
In Pakistan, blasphemy remains a contentious issue that has resulted in severe penalties for those who commit it.
